EDITH JIMENEZ

Born in Asuncion (Paraguay) in 1918 and died in 2004.  In 1943 begins her arts studies with Jaime Bestard who encouraged her to get away from all types of academism.  In 1952 has her first individual exhibition at the Paraguay American Cultural Centre.  In 1953 she is nominated official representative in Painting at the II Biennial of Sao Paulo (Brazil) and takes part of the exhibition organized by the show windows of Palma Street in Asuncion (Palma Street is the main downtown street in Asuncion).  In 1956 she begins studying wood engraving at the Brazilian Cultural Mission with Livio Abramo and a year later receives a scholarship from the Brazilian Government to study this discipline in Sao Paulo at the Modern Art Museum and at the “Estudio Gravura” always under Livio Abramo´s direction.  In 1960 obtains the Gold Medal in the First Latin-American Xylography Competition carried out in Buenos Aires, Argentina and in this same year starts teaching wood engraving (xylography) at the Centre of Brazilian Studies.  Exhibits in 1961 at the IV Biennial of Sao Paulo where she receives the Honour Medal and Silver Plate, in 1963 again at the V Biennial where for the second time wins the Honour Medal and Silver Plate; she also receives an Honour Mention at the First American Engraving Biennial in Santiago de Chile.
